The famous spa towns Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein as well as Dorfgastein are situated in the 40 km long Gastein Valley in the Pongau district of the federal state of Salzburg. The two spa towns can look back to a common longstanding tradition as health resorts for guests from around the world. Gastein Valley was used as trade route, connecting the north and the south, already by the Romans and Celts. Apart from gold mining, the valley was known for its healing springs already in mediaeval times. In 1904, the chemist Marie Curie established radon gas in the thermal water, and tourism started to grow in Gastein Valley with the construction of the Tauern railway.
Apart from summer tourism, the programme for alpine skiing was extended and Bad Gastein was the venue of the Alpine Skiing World Championships in 1958. Toni Sailer from Kitzbühel left his mark on this world championships: the likable athlete of the century won one silver and three gold medals and became the hero of this world championships. The skiing facilities were constantly expanded. Gastein Valley is part of the Ski Amadè network. 25 resorts are joint together in this network and offer guests 270 ski lifts and cable cars in winter. Four of those ski resorts are located in Gastein Valley. The Schlossalmbahn cable car in Bad Hofgastein was newly built in 2018 and offers the highest level of comfort for skiers in winter and hikers in spring, summer and autumn. Thus, you can arrange a holiday full of activities!

Emperor Franz Josef and Empress Sissi of Austria, for example, visited Bad Gastein in the 19th century. The Shah of Persia and the Saudi Arabian King Ibn Saud were also among the town’s famous visitors. The most southern part of the valley is situated in 1000 m above sea level. Impressive is the world-famous waterfall in the centre of the town and the hotels built into the hillside. The Felsentherme spa, the healing cave and the thermal springs attract many visitors to this spa town every year. The Stubnerkogel ski resort is connected with the Angertal Valley, and this valley is in turn connected with the Schlossalm ski resort – ideal conditions for skiers who like to treat themselves.
