Located in 1,907 m above sea level, at the far end of the Ötztal valley, Obergurgl is the highest-situated village in Austria. Obergurgl and Hochgurgl are surrounded by the impressive peaks of the Ötztal Alps. The highest elevation is the Wildspitze with 3,768 metres.
The first traces of a settlement in this area beyond the South Tyrolean Vinschgau Valley date back to 7,500 B.C. Gurgl was first mentioned in 1250 and the church was consecrated in 1737 - it was dedicated to St. John Nepomuk. While livestock farming was the main activity at that time, Obergurgl and Hochgurgl have become an internationally renowned winter sports resort through alpinism.
The first T-bar lift was built in 1949, followed by a chair lift to Hohe Mut in 1953. With 25 modern lifts and 112 kilometres of pistes, Obergurgl and Hochgurgl now offer visitors a snow-reliable ski resort from November to May. Also often called the "Diamond of the Alps", this tranquil mountain village on sunny slopes boasts pistes of all levels of difficulty, ranging from 1,800 to 3,000 metres.
1960 saw the opening of the Timmelsjoch Hochalpenstrasse from the Ötztal valley to the Passeier Valley in South Tyrol. The pass road is only accessible in summer - after all, the pass crossing is situated in 2,474 m above sea level. The development of this road also made the foundation of the Hochgurgl hotel village possible.
Also remarkable is the landing of Auguste Piccard with a balloon at Gurgler Ferner on 27 May 1931. He had previously set an altitude record (15,785 m!!) and could only be recovered from Obergurgl the next day. A monument commemorates this landing.
