Obertauern is located between the villages of Tweng and Untertauern in the Radstadt Tauern. The Katschberg road leads across the Radstadt Tauern Pass, and the village of Obertauern is situated around the top of the pass. Due to its geographical location, this area was probably already populated in the 4th to 1st century BC, and the Romans may also have travelled along this road. The first church was built around 1224. The first inns on the pass were built in 1517, and these buildings still exist today (Schaidberg and Wisenegg). From the 17th century until around 1918, silver and copper were mined in the region. The Seekarhütte served as accommodation for the miners and is now a well-known 5-star hotel.
The first skiers came to Obertauern in 1902. The visit of the "Beatles" to Obertauern in 1965 is also worth mentioning. Footage for the film "Help" was shot here, and they performed their only concert in Austria back then at the Hotel Marietta.
